Former Arsenal striker Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, 33, has been denied bail after being charge with importing drugs after £600,000 worth of cannabis was seize at Stansted Airport.
The striker, who join Greenock Morton on a free transfer earlier this summer, was arrest at 8am local time on Wednesday after UK Border Force officers found contraband in several pieces of luggage which arrived in the UK on a flight from Bangkok on September 2.
The National Crime Agency (NCA) said around 60 kilograms of drugs were found in two suitcases, although prosecutors later said four suitcases were seize.
The NCA later arrested the footballer, who Arsene Wenger once described as having ‘outstanding qualities’, and charged him with importing a Class B drug.
He was take to Carlisle for questioning and appear before Deputy District Judge Steven Jonas on Thursday. While Greenock Morton did not comment on the matter.
Emmanuel-Thomas joined Arsenal’s academy at the age of eight but failed to make an impact in the first team.
He made his Premier League debut for UFABET the club in a 2–0 defeat at Chelsea in October 2010. And a month later he scored in a 2–1 Champions League defeat at Shakhtar Donetsk. Before leaving the Gunners for Ipswich for £1.1m in 2011.
